Promoting Health, Protecting the Environment, Advancing Justice and Sustainability in Africa
The Africa Journal of Health and Environmental Law (AJHEL) operates an Open Access publishing model designed to make published research widely accessible to researchers, academics, legal practitioners, health professionals, environmental experts, policymakers and the wider public.
To support the editorial, peer-review, production and digital publication of accepted manuscripts, AJHEL applies a standard Article Processing Charge (APC) of USD 100 per accepted article/paper.
The standard APC applies to each accepted manuscript regardless of:

AJHEL does not charge a submission fee.
Authors may submit manuscripts for editorial consideration and peer review without making any payment.
The APC becomes payable only after the manuscript has successfully completed the editorial and peer-review process and has been formally accepted for publication.

The Editorial Board may determine whether a particular contribution falls within the applicable APC category.
Ordinary revisions requested by editors or peer reviewers do not attract an additional publication charge.
The standard APC covers the accepted manuscript through the normal editorial and production process.
Routine corrections associated with the normal publication process do not ordinarily attract an additional fee.
Where a published article requires an Erratum or Corrigendum because of an editorial, production or legitimate author error, the Journal will determine the appropriate corrective action.
AJHEL recognises that financial circumstances may create barriers to scholarly publication.
The Journal may, at the discretion of the Editorial Board and Publisher, consider:

A waiver request will not influence the peer-review or editorial decision.

The official APC is denominated in United States Dollars (USD).
Where payment is made in another currency, the applicable amount may be calculated according to the prevailing exchange rate used by the authorised payment provider.
Any applicable transaction, bank or payment-processing charges may be borne by the author unless otherwise agreed.
Financial administration is kept separate from editorial decision-making.
Editors and reviewers must evaluate manuscripts based on scholarly criteria including:
Payment of the APC must never be a factor in deciding whether a manuscript is accepted or rejected.
The APC supports AJHEL's Open Access publishing model.
Once an accepted article is formally published, it is made available to readers without subscription or paywall barriers, subject to the applicable copyright and licence terms.

Where an article has been accepted and the APC has been paid, refund requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
